Do you have any fair weather friends? You know…the kind who are there when things are going smoothly, but who disappear at the first sign of trouble? I’d guess each of us have had these people in our lives, at one time or the other. Maybe we’ve been the ones who high-tail it when the going gets messy in our friend’s lives.
I’ve had my share of life’s problems, and I’m sure you have, as well. Fortunately, there is one we can depend on to always be there. To stay with us when the going gets tough. It’s Jesus. He’s promised to never leave or forsake us, and that’s something we can hang onto when life threatens to undo us.
In the midst of our pain and suffering, we might feel abandoned, or forgotten, but that’s not the way it really is. God still cares. He’s still sovereign. He’s still involved with working things out. He’s constant. Not wishy-washy like we are. His goodness doesn’t depend our our goodness. Thankfully.
I’ve mentioned before, even though we may not see his hand at work, God doesn’t go MIA on us. He’s right there with us. In good and in bad. He won’t forsake or abandon us. Ever.
Going through some tough stuff? Remember, like a loving father, holding you close, God’s going through it with you. Nothing reaches us that God hasn’t planned or permitted. Remember the things Jesus has already brought you through. He didn’t bring you this far to drop you now.
Through Christ, we are more than conquerors and overcomers.
No one will be able to oppose you as long as you live, for I will be with you just as I was with Moses; I will not abandon you or fail to help you. Joshua 1:5
I wish you well.

All my life I seem to have had fair weather friends!!! I feel saddened by that sometimes. Btw I put your blog on my blogroll a little while back. Perhaps you’d like to have a look at mine sometimes?!

It is sad when people we consider friends, don’t stick around when the going gets tough. Thanks for putting me on your blogroll, Tim. I did check out your blog…keep working on all those ideas. When God decides it’s time, He’ll get your work into the hands He wants to see it. Good thing He’s in control, right? On our own, we’d be a mess.

Sandy- I love this post! I believe often people are also threatened by our vulnerability. Let me explain. When we are at our most vulnerable, that is the invitation for them to “show up” for us. Even if you never ask for help, throughout this period, they fear you will. It may not even be conscious. Then what? They will have to “show up” …. And sadly a lot of people feel incompetent to do that. And they internally are feeling insecure about their own ability to handle what’s on their own plate. Sometimes they see us as “so strong” that we don’t need them. In fact, we are the ones they would come to for support.
Sometimes it’s that they “assume” a lot. They assume we have enough of a support system in place already. Sometimes they are consumed by their own lives and life dramas. And as I am seeing now, most of the time people are so overcommitted or self-absorbed with their lives, that they don’t have energy or space for others.
Bottom line, it stinks! 🙂 and because of it I try to be the friend to others that I would like to have. Then sometimes God puts in our path a friend who is authentic and has a sincere heart. But it’s always up to both to treasure the friendship enough to maintain and grow it. I want to thank you for being such a friend to me. Love you dear friend!

Well put, Ella.
One other thing I’ve observed, besides there being those who are only willing to give X amount of time, and are afraid you’ll ask for X & Y, is often people fear they need to know how to solve whatever’s going on, when that really isn’t their job. To them I would say, just stand w/ me. Let me know you’re there. Listen when I vent. That’s what God does. Stands w/ us. Let’s us rant…and like you said, puts people in our path, to walk along side.
Thanks for the sweet thoughts, Girlfriend. Love you too.
