Recently, Pilot and I returned home after a week away to find intruders in our kitchen. Pilot spotted them first. Tiny, black insects scurried across the counter top. Sugar ants. He immediately went to the store and purchased ant traps.

Unsuspecting any foul play, these tiny ants flocked to the bait. They brought their friends and family members to the tasty poison. They unwittingly carried the poison back to their homes. They carried death…destruction…doom because they took the bait.

Although I was glad to see the creatures take the bait, I felt sorry for them at the same time. While pondering their fate, I thought how humans take poisonous bait, too.

We listen to harmful words. We follow harmful people. We consume harmful things, whether it is something we eat, drink, inhale, watch, read, listen to…

It’s bad enough we take the bait ourselves, but often times we aren’t content until we invite our friends and family to join us, poisoning them as well.

Like the ants, we bring poison into our homes. Before you know it, we’re dead. Sometimes the poison kills physically. Sometimes spiritually. Sometimes emotionally. Either way, it’s destructive nonetheless.

We’ve fallen for the trap. We’ve taken the bait.

Those ants didn’t know better. The trap was designed to entice. And it did. The bait was designed to kill. And it did.

We humans are smarter than ants. We know better than to fall into the traps Satan designs to entice and kill. Yet, we fall anyway. Fortunately, we have Jesus to help us avoid the traps. And when we do get ensnared, he is there to rescue us when we call out to him.

I’m glad I’m not an ant, but sometimes I act just as clueless when I take the bait Satan sets out.
