Several Sundays back, I asked Pilot if the outfit I had on made me look like a Weeble.
Pilot paused, and chose his words carefully before he answered. The sign of a truly wise man.
“It’s not flattering.”
That was all I needed to confirm my suspicions that I did indeed look like one of our son, Pie’s, toys when he was young. I quickly changed outfits to something more flattering.
When I relayed this incident to a friend, she said her teenage daughter went crying down the hall when she answered honestly to the teen’s question. “Do these jeans make my rear look big?”
How many of us want to be lied to by a trusted friend, even when the truth may not be what we want to hear? Not many, I would suspect. If our friends can’t, or won’t, give us honest answers, who will?
Wouldn’t we rather have a friend let us know when we’re heading the wrong direction in life than find out they knew, but did nothing about it?
Wouldn’t we rather have an honest “no” than a lying “yes”?
The truth needs to be delivered with love, but delivered nonetheless. Even when it sends us crying down the hall, or into our closet to change clothes.

In the end, people appreciate frankness more than flattery. Proverbs 28:23 (TLB)

Yes, sometimes truth hurts……but, in the long run it will become a positive force. We often get feathers ruffled, but we ask for a truthful answer. If one’s friendship is truly friendship we accept it unconditionally. Don’t you agree?
