I read an interesting verse in Proverbs that got me thinking about the trade offs we sometimes make. We make our choice at the expense of something else.

For example, let’s say we would love to have an inside dog as a pet, if only it wouldn’t shed, track in dirt and smell up the house. But could the dog provide us with companionship or protection that is worth more than a fresh-smelling home?

We’d love to advance in our career, if only it didn’t require extra time and effort spent taking additional courses to make it happen. But could the advancement give us more free time and a better life in the long run?

We’d love to visit our friend, if only we didn’t have to see their spouse, child, dog…in the process. But could saving the friendship be important enough for us to find ways to deal with the others in their life?

We’d love to talk with our neighbors and co-workers about what Jesus means to us, if only we could be positive they wouldn’t think us weird. But could our words be what they are longing to hear, that will make all the difference in the world?

Trade offs. We decide. We choose. It’s in our hands. Do we sacrifice one thing for the sake of the other? Hard decisions we each face. Decisions we need to weigh by looking at every angle.

Sure, I wish I had a clean house that didn’t smell like stinky dog, but then I wouldn’t have Bear to keep me company during the day, now would I? Trade offs. I chose.
