Adults are responsible for teaching the next generation about the Lord God. He instructed Israel and us to pass his laws to the generations that come after us. (Deuteronomy 6:6-9)

Many of the Israelites who entered the Promised Land did not instruct their children in the ways of the LORD. Because of that fact, idol worship took the pace of worshiping the One True God.

We are not to treat God as an afterthought, an I’ll-think-about-him-if-it’s convenient, or if-he-fits-into-my-schedule-then-I’ll-attend-church type deal. God is to come first.

When the Israelites entered the Promised Land they did a poor job of teaching the future generations God’s laws. As a result, the children did not know the Lord. They began worshiping the idols of the Canaanites.

I’ve mentioned idols earlier, so won’t go into details here other than to remind us God says nothing is to be placed before him. Nothing.

If we have not trained the next generation in the ways of the Lord, are we allowing them and their children to worship idols?

Being part of a body of believers is a good place to start. We may not have children or grandchildren to raise, but there’s a good possibility there is a place for us to be a positive influence in the life of a young person.

I’ve heard it said the church is one generation away from dying. Scary thought, wouldn’t you say?

So what are we going to do about it?
