Who’s Holding On To Whom?

Years ago, I took part in a discussion trying to decide if we cling to God like a monkey clings to its mother, or if God clutches us like a mother cat clutches her baby by the scruff of the neck.

The same could be asked of Michelangelo’s famous Sistine Chapel Adam painting. Who’s reaching for whom? courtesy bingSo I’m pondering …

Do we ever get lazy in our pursuit of God, stop holding on to him, and expect him to do all the work of holding on to us?

Are we content to let him grab us by the neck and cart us around? Or do we latch onto him for dear life?

Or, perhaps, it is a combination of both?

Are there times when we wouldn’t want it any other way than to hold on to Jesus and go where he leads us? We couldn’t bear the thought of not being in his presence.

Yet, at times, we turn right around and refuse to follow, leaving little option but to be grabbed by the scruff of the neck?

God holds us by his righteous right hand.

Monkey or cat? Or maybe a combination of both?

So, which do you think it is?
