Much like any relationship, in order to know who God is, we need to spend time with him. We need to become familiar with who he is, his character, attributes and names.
When Pilot and I began dating we knew very little about each other. As with anyone, the more time we spent together, the more familiar we became. We discovered what we liked and what we didn’t. Little by little we learned more and more, until the day it became obvious we were meant to spend the rest of our lives together. I imagine that’s how it is with most relationships.
I have a habit of giving people multiple nicknames. It’s just something I do. Perhaps you do the same thing. Perhaps you know the people in your lives so completely you have various names to match their attributes and character.
But what about God?
Have we spent enough time with him to understand and know who he is, and the names that define his character and attributes?
One of the books in my To Be Read pile is Kay Arthur’s Lord, I Want to Know You. It is a devotional study on the names of God.
If we look in a Bible concordance we find reference after reference listing God’s attributes, character and names. Because I haven’t fully studied this subject to any great degree, I tend to limit God to only a handful of names.
Like I said at the beginning of this post, the more time we spend around someone, the more we know and are known.
I want to know God in a more complete way. I want to understand who he is to the fullest of my ability to understand.
In order to do that, I must take the time to be still. To listen. To discover who God truly is so I can worship him more fully and completely.
How about you?
Have you studied the names of God? If so, has it made a difference in how you worship him?

“Be still, be calm, see, and understand I am the True God. I am honored among all the nations. I am honored over all the earth.” Psalm 46:10 (VOICE)
I wish you well.
