Perhaps you remember the olden days when letter writing was the main mode of communication. In the mid-1960s my oldest sister, California Girl, volunteered to go to Saigon as a nurse with the U.S. State Department during the Viet Nam War. In order to communicate, we wrote letters back and forth.

At that time there was no email, Skype, Facebook, Twitter, or whatever else there is nowadays to help people stay in touch. Although there was the occasional overseas phone call throughout the years she was there, we mostly kept in touch the old-fashioned way.

We wrote letters, mailed them, waited for them to arrive on the other side of the world … which took forever … waited for a reply … which took another forever … and by the time a response ended up in our hands, who knew what else had transpired in the meantime.

I was thinking about this the other day. As I thought, I reflected on how important it was to write those letters and stay in touch.

It’s important to stay in touch with Jesus, too. Don’t you think? He may be on the other side of the world, but he still longs to hear from us, and has things he wants to tell us.

Jesus’ timeless words are written down in the Bible. Every single day he sends us gifts with each new sunrise. We don’t have to wait weeks before we tell him know what’s going on in our lives. He hears our prayers day or night.

The apostle Paul said because we have the Spirit of God living in us, we are letters known and read by everyone. People don’t have to wait a week or longer to read what God has written on our hearts. If we are living for Jesus, then what he’s written will shine through in the way we live.
