Sunday Scriptures — Opened Doors

by Sandy Kirby Quandt

In the beginning chapters of the book of Revelation, letters are addressed to seven different churches. To the church in Philadelphia a message was sent by the one who is holy and true, and has the key of David to open what no one can shut, and to shut what no one can open. Jesus.

Unlike some of the letters written to the churches, this was a letter of encouragement and commendation.

Seems to me we could learn a thing or two about open and closed doors from the church at Philadelphia. The Bible tells us Jesus knew the church well. He knew they weren’t strong, yet they had tried to obey him and had not denied his name. Because of those things, Jesus would open a door for them. It was a door no one would be able to shut.

As we work our way through the first month of 2016, are you struggling with doors that refused to open in 2015? I know I am.

The doors to things I hoped and planned for wouldn’t budge. They were shut tight. In the process of pounding on doors that won’t open, it’s easy to grow weary, tired, with little strength on the verge of giving up.

Knowing God is in control and is Sovereign over all things helps deal with the disappointment of those closed doors, but I’m telling you, I sure would like for God to put a great big check mark on the doors he intends to open, and a great big X on the ones he intends to keep shut.

Although I believe if we continue to walk in line with God’s will, and don’t give up doing the good works he’s called us to, he’ll strengthen us and open the doors he wants us to walk through in his perfect timing, it’s still hard to wait. Don’t you think?

Are there any doors which at first appeared shut for you, that were later opened?

I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. Revelation 3:8 (NIV)

I wish you well.
