Several weeks ago a box of cookbooks arrived from Sissy. There was quite the assortment of recipes inside. Although the box was addressed to me, the contents were meant for Pilot.
The week before I received the cookbooks, Pie visited Sissy and Chief. When Sissy told Pie she was sending me the cookbooks, they both laughed at the absurdity of the idea.
It is no secret to anyone who knows me, I am not a cook. I enjoy finding new recipes that look delicious and imagine eating them, but then I show them to Pilot, and he creates them. 🙂 Unless it is a dessert. Then I’m the creator.
Don’t get me wrong. I can cook. I just don’t enjoy cooking. Doubt I ever will. It is not something I aspire to. Fortunately, God blessed me with an incredible husband who loves to cook.
Among Pilot’s many cookbooks is The Joy of Cooking. Mine? Fix-it and Forget-it. Seriously.
To prove my point, boiling eggs is simple, right? Put some eggs in a pan of water. Boil rapidly ’til you figure they are done. Remove the boiling pot of water from heat. Enjoy. Well. I’ve even given that task to Pilot. He knows just how long they should simmer.
When I boil eggs, I consult my Better Homes and Gardens New Cookbook. It says, “When water boils, reduce heat at once to keep water just below simmering. Cover and cook for 15-20 minutes.”
Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and keep just below simmer until done.
Have you ever felt as if you are sitting in a rapidly boiling pot of water? You’re waiting for the heat to be turned to just below simmer, but relief doesn’t seem in sight?
If I look back at my cookbook, it also says to “cover and cook”.
Although we may feel as if we’ve simmered long enough … done … ding … time’s up … get me out of this boiling water, God hasn’t forgotten us.
He has us covered with his love. We are sheltered by his mercy and his grace. God has his hand on the controls. He knows when to turn down the heat at just the right time.
He won’t leave us boiling longer than necessary to achieve his purpose.
What do you do to remind yourself God hasn’t forgotten you when you feel you are sitting in a pot of boiling water?
