Sunday Scriptures — Our Names Are Engraved On God’s Hand

By Sandy Kirby Quandt

We like to label things to show we own them, don’t we?

I’ve put my name on my books, my dog’s medications when he was boarded, and various things I’ve loaned out. My dad engraved my name on my bicycle in case I ever lost it. He burned my brother’s name into his baseball mitt. I’ve written Pie’s name with a Sharpie on items he took to camp so it wouldn’t wash off.

All to show possession. To show ownership. To show who the items belonged to.

Ownership was written in ways that were permanent. Ways that couldn’t be washed away, rubbed out, or covered up. We like to label things with our name in case they get lost or misplaced. That way, they can be returned.

God has done the same thing. He has engraved the names of those who belong to him through his son, Jesus’ sacrifice, on the palm of his hand. It’s a permanent deal. It can’t be washed out, rubbed off, or covered up. God and Jesus know us by name. We belong to them.

The Creator of the Universe cares enough about us that he doesn’t want to lose us. He doesn’t want us to wander away and get lost. But if we do, he has our name on his hand to prove ownership. He makes a way for us to be returned.

That gives me great comfort. How about you?

“Can a woman forget her own baby and not love the child she bore? Even if a mother should forget her child, I (God) will never forget you. Jerusalem, I can never forget you! I have written your name on the palms of my hands. Isaiah 49:15-16

I wish you well.
