Greater Is He

by Sandy Kirby Quandt

One of my favorite Bible verses is 1 John 4:4. This truth gives me courage, strength and help to face the things this world throws at me.

Over the past month this world has threatened to undo the lives of several of my friends.

One friend was diagnosed with Stage 5 cancer. Greater is HE.

One friend’s nineteen-year-old son hung himself. Greater is HE.

One friend’s husband died, and two days later her only child was admitted to the emergency room. Greater is HE.

One friend is discouraged and depressed with his job situation. Greater is HE.

One friend is faced with making decisions she doesn’t want to make, but knows she must. Greater is HE.

Disease. Heartache. Loss. Depression. Uncertainty.

Any one of those issues can make us doubt. Wonder. Question. But that’s just what Satan wants us to do. He wants us to feel defeated. Alone. Devastated. Helpless. Without hope.

Because Jesus defeated Satan through his death and resurrection, Satan has no power. He’d like for us to think he does, but he doesn’t.

If we confess Jesus as LORD and Savior, his shield of protection is wrapped tightly around us and Satan’s fiery arrows fall extinguished to the ground through Christ’s power. At the name of Jesus, Satan has to flee.

Yes, it hurts to be attacked by a disease. Yes, it hurts to lose a loved one. Yes, it hurts to be uncertain about our jobs. Yes, it hurts to make decisions we don’t want to make. Because we live in a fallen world, life hurts at times.

Jesus told us in this world we WILL have troubles but to not lose hope because he has overcome the world. And Satan.

Jesus will never leave of forsake us. He is the Mighty Warrior who has conquered hell, sin, Satan and death.

Jesus is the Victor, and he loves us.

On our own we can do nothing, but when we stay attached to the Vine, Jesus, we can be overcomers, because he overcame.

When Satan threatens us with his lies and half-truths, devastation, destruction, and loss, doing his best to get us off course, get us to doubt our God, we need to remember 1 John 4:4 and defiantly tell the father of all lies, “Greater is the ONE living inside of me than the one who is in the world.”

Glory, hallelujah, amen!

My dear children, you belong to God and have defeated them; because God’s Spirit, who is in you, is greater than the devil, who is in the world. 1 John 4:4 (NCV)

I wish you well.
