During a recent Bible lesson one Sunday morning, our discussion centered around the fact as followers of Christ and as the light to a world in darkness, we are called by God to value all people because all people are created in the image of God.

The lesson emphasized the fact God will hold believers accountable for how we treat others. Not just those we consider friends, or those like us.

One of the scriptures in our lesson that day was Proverbs 24:12. That verse says, If you say, “But we didn’t know about this,” won’t he who weighs hearts consider it? Won’t he who protects your life know? Won’t he repay a person according to his work?

The book of James also challenges followers of Christ to put our faith into action on the behalf of others. In chapter 2 verses 15-17 James wrote,  If you know someone who doesn’t have any clothes or food, you shouldn’t just say, “I hope all goes well for you. I hope you will be warm and have plenty to eat.” What good is it to say this, unless you do something to help? Faith that doesn’t lead us to do good deeds is all alone and dead!

Two quotes from history were included in our lesson which I’d like to share with you.

The first is a quote from Winston Churchill who quoted Edmund Burke during World War II saying, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

The other quote is from Martin Luther King, Jr. who said the greatest tragedy would be “the appalling silence of the good people.”

One of the questions which the writer of the lesson asked was this. “What factors could contribute to good people remaining silent?”

I pray the question makes each of us think.
