Well. The hawks have struck again, as evidenced by the pile of mourning dove feathers in the backyard. While I admire hawks’ beauty and strength, I don’t appreciate them attacking creatures in our backyard.

I’ve discussed this with God, and asked him to please let the hawks find their food somewhere else, but until the time he decides that’s an acceptable solution, I’ve decided to put obstacles in the way of the hawks’ search for prey. I’ve placed various chairs and free-standing metal trellises along the runway they use for their strafing missions down the center of our backyard.

I know … it may be a tad over the top, but I want our yard to be a safe sanctuary for the critters who visit. Yes. Even the skunk. I want to make it as hard as possible for predators to make victims of those who come to our yard for sanctuary.

Maybe.

As I thought about our yard being a sanctuary, I thought about God’s sanctuary and the peace we can have when we are close to him. God tells us he will dwell with us and make his home with us. He will be our God and we will be his people.

In God’s sanctuary evil will not exist. The deceiver’s minions will not be allowed to swoop down and snatch us as their prey. God will protect and comfort his people. He will set obstacles in the way of the father of all lies who prowls through the night looking for someone to devour.

Within the walls of God’s sanctuary we are safe. He provides for us. His promise is everlasting. In his safety we will be allowed to flourish.

I’m not sure if the obstacles I’ve set in our backyard sanctuary will deter the hawks’ attacks, but I know this; nothing will enter God’s sanctuary he didn’t either plan or permit.
