Sunday Scriptures — Pursued

by Sandy Kirby Quandt

When Pie was in elementary school he was pursued and he didn’t like it one bit.

The pursuit occurred when he was at my mother’s home. The pursuer was the granddaughter of one of my mother’s cousin’s.

Elizabeth was a cute little girl several years younger than Pie and she liked him — a lot. She chased him relentlessly calling him, “Edna’s Boy”.

In his attempt to escape her, Pie took drastic measures.

He got into my mother’s car and locked the doors.

Still, Elizabeth didn’t give up. She pressed her face against the glass and kept after Edna’s Boy until it was time for her to go home.

Relieved, a sweaty Pie unlocked the doors and got out of the hot car.

After Elizabeth grew up into the beautiful woman she is, I’m thinking Pie might have wished he hadn’t worked so hard to avoid her.

There is someone Beautiful who pursues us too, you know.

His name is Jesus. He knows us by name. He seeks us out even when we’re all sweaty because we’ve locked ourselves into a hot car and refuse to acknowledge his existence.

Jesus is all we need.

He gives us rest when we’re weary. He gives us peace when we’re stressed. He will guide us in the best path for our lives if we let him.

Even when our life seems upside down and full of the awful we don’t have to be afraid, because Jesus is still right there with us offering comfort, protection and blessing.

Elizabeth didn’t give up her pursuit of Pie until her grandmother took her home. Jesus won’t give up his pursuit of us until our life on this earth ends.

Wouldn’t it be better to open the locked doors of our heart and invite him in while we can enjoy his company, rather than keep him shut out and wish after it’s too late, we’d acted differently?

The LORD is my shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name. Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me. You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings. Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the LORD forever. Psalm 23:1-6 (NLT)

I wish you well.
