This past Monday, Pilot and I joined about 25 others bright and early at the beach as part of Surf With Him. A ministry that gives kids in crisis an opportunity to experience the joy of a day at the beach learning to surf. Three vans full of about 30 boys and girls arrived an hour early, but God is in control…the Ohana surf shop instructors were an hour early, too. They said they’d go ahead and start the surf lessons instead of waiting until 10 AM as previously planned. They didn’t cut the lessons short either, but kept on going until noon.

The water was waist high. The waves were knee high. Not exactly epic, but perfect for beginners.

Though thunder boomed onshore behind us, the sun continued to shine over us. When all the kids were given the go-head, and scrambled for the water, two girls hung back, kicking the sand and hugging their arms tightly around their bodies. Those were the ones I spent my day with.

One girl didn’t know how to swim. The other didn’t want to go into the water because it wasn’t clear blue. Can’t say I blame her.

While Pilot helped the newbie surfers, my two new friends and I spent time talking, walking out onto the pier just because it was there, and working on a sandcastle. Basically, we had no agenda. We just spent time together.

When the time came to leave, the three of us hugged. They asked if Pilot and I would be back next year. LORD willing, was my reply.

I’m not a surfer. That’s Pilot’s domain. But not being able to surf didn’t keep me from being able to share a small part of my life and what Jesus has done for me, with two girls who need to know Jesus loves them, too. He cares for them and hurts when they hurt. He wants good things for them.

We might look at what others are doing and think, I can’t do that. Maybe not, but each of us can do something. Search for your something. Don’t be afraid to use it to share Jesus with others.

Just as I didn’t let my inability to surf keep me from attending a designated surf day at the beach, don’t let what you can’t do keep you from doing what you can.
