Soul Care for the Battle Book Review

Soul Care for the Battle A Guided Journal by Susie Larson is designed to take you deeper into the biblical truths and battle strategies from Susie’s book, Strong in Battle which I reviewed here. While you may want to read Strong in the Battle as you journal, it isn’t necessary.

I’ve never worked through a guided journal, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. What I found is 218 pages of scripture, quotes, prayer prompts, and questions designed to take inventory of thoughts and feelings on a deeper level, to be better equipped to stand strong in the everyday battles Satan works hard to defeat us in.

Some of the journaling prompts are Precious Memories, Thoughts about God, Laments, Blessings, and Taking Thoughts Captive, but there’s much more.

One section I look forward to journaling through is the section on Expectations versus Expectancy.

If you enjoy guided journaling, or if you are new to it, perhaps you should give Soul Care for the Battle a try.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House for a fair and honest review, which is exactly what I gave.

Have you read this book? If so, what was your impression of it?

I wish you well.

Strong in the Battle Book Review

I highly recommend Strong in the Battle by Susie Larson. The spiritual truths contained in this book are truths we need to hold onto to help us be victorious in the midst of our battles.

Following each chapter are sections for practical application. They are: The Humble Way, Discern the Fiery Arrows, Say NO!, and Say YES! There is also a section called Spiritual Intelligence Training. This takes you deeper into Scripture relating to principles in the chapter.

There is so much in this book to ponder and be strengthened by. I found journaling my thoughts as I read helpful.

If you are in a spiritual battle, or want to prepare for the enemy’s next attack, Strong in the Battle is a great resource.

Opportunity for Faith

Photo by Dušan veverkolog on Unsplash

Author Susie Larson says, “The locked gates before you are nothing more than an opportunity for faith.” Do you believe it? King David did.

David was thirty years old when he became king over Israel and Judah. Once all the tribes of Israel recognized David as king, he headed for Jerusalem, or Jebus, as the Jebusites called the city. Side note: When Joshua led the Israelites into Canaan, they never did conquer the city of Jebus. That’s the reason it remained in  the Jebusites’ hands.

When the Jebusites saw David and his men approach their walled city, they told David he would never get in. Nevertheless, David got in. He not only got into the fortress, he conquered the city. He renamed it the City of David; Jerusalem, where he reigned for thirty-three years.

David saw the obstacle in front of him as an opportunity for faith. He trusted the God who delivered him from the paw of the bear and paw of the lion, and might I add, the spear of Saul, to make a way.

How often, I wonder, do we look at the obstacles and see them as an opportunity for our faith to grow? Speaking for myself here, maybe not as often as we would like or as often as we should.

Many times I look at the fortress and don’t notice anything else. I head out to conquer the city and run smack into the wall, and that wall is all I see.

Although David may have thought otherwise, the City of David wasn’t all about him. Jerusalem is where our Lord and Savior was falsely accused, illegally tried, and brutally murdered for a crime he did not commit. Jesus rose triumphantly from the grave in that city. His Spirit was poured out on his disciples in that city fifty days later at Pentecost.

Just as with David, any fortress we might conquer is not all about us. If it is something God calls us to conquer, he’ll provide a way and the power for us to make it so.

So just how did David and his men capture the city of Jebus? David told his men to enter through the water shaft. He used an unconventional method and took the opportunity for faith to overcome the obstacle before him.

What opportunity for faith are you facing? Keep searching for the water shaft.

David then took up residence in the fortress and called it the City of David. He built up the area around it, from the terraces inward. And he became more and more powerful, because the Lord God Almighty was with him. 2 Samuel 5:9-10 (TLB)

Prevail Book Review

Beginning with Genesis 12:7 and ending with Revelation 22:12-13, Prevail: 365 Days of Enduring Strength from God’s Word by Susie Larson gives readers exactly what the title promises; enduring strength from God’s word.

Reading Prevail is like talking with a trusted friend about your problems, fears, and doubts, knowing she will point you to God’s truths without the least bit of ridicule or condemnation.

Although I appreciate the way Prevail works its way sequentially through the Bible, I especially appreciate the Table of Contents which lists each devotion by subject. I find that helpful when looking for a devotion that addresses a specific need.

Each devotion has a highlighted verse, meaningful commentary of the Scripture that speaks to the reader in a personable, encouraging way, and points the reader to God. This is followed by the Scripture reference the devotion came from for further study, an application statement, and short prayer. The pages are beautiful. Swirls of varying pastels adorn each page. I found that soothing.

I highly recommend Prevail: 365 Days of Enduring Strength from God’s Word for those seeking more from their daily devotional.
